Ferry to Mazatlan and beyond

Day  5  January 19, 2012   Todos Santos to Cabo San Lucas and then to La Paz to the Baja Ferry
Miles ridden  197 today, 1193 miles from Huntington Beach to Cabo San Lucas
Gas  $174
Meals:  Our first Chicken on the grill, just outside of La Paz, oh so good!  1 whole chicken, 2 sodas $110 pesos.  Dinner was free on the ferry (beans rice and either pork, fish or beef)
Lodging: slept miserably on the ferry, we should have gotten a cabin. What were we thinking, 16 hours on the ferry and we boarded at 6pm.    It was sweltering hot inside the ferry and just a little too cool outside on the deck. This ferry (Baja Ferry) is huge and we were parked on the lowest deck, so we will be the last ones off.
Day 6  January 20, 2012  Mazatlan to Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico
Miles ridden:  187
Gas: $256 pesos
Meals: we had a lovely dinner at the hotel, Carl had a shrimp queso and Jonnie had Bistek and chilies
Lodging: $645 pesos
Oh what a long 16 hours on the ferry, hotter than the hubs of hell. Every seat on the ferry was taken.  I cannot imagine what it is like in the summer time.
Carl’s Lessons Learned:
1.       Get a cabina on the ferry so you are well rested.  Do not wait until boarding the ferry to try to get the cabin.
2.      When Jonnie goes on boat rides with me, I do not get sick.  Or the water was dead calm.
While Jonnie was in the pharmacy trying to replace some of the stuff that she left in the motel room in Todos Santos (ergh, the blue bag was left hanging on the towel bar) Carl visited with a young gentleman, Jesus.  He had worked in the US for several years with race horses in Florida.  He has given us his phone number in case we have problems in Mexico.  He has offered to translate for us as needed.  These are the interactions that we really love about Mexico and Central America.
The scenery has changed considerably.  Baja was desert and now we have mountains and getting more and more plush and green.  We are seeing more farm trucks hauling tomatoes, green beans and maybe jicama.  There are more fruit stands.  We will have to stop soon.
